Christmas in the ER

After opening presents on Christmas morning we went to visit Darin's grandparents an hour plus across town. It was such a nice time to be with them since we rarely see them, and they hadn't had the chance to even meet Rylie yet. We were having a great time just relaxing and chatting, when we heard a piercing scream from outside. Next thing we know, Daniel was at the door completely hysterical. Darin's grandpa owns a Model T Ford and Daniel was playing in it with his cousin. Daniel had his hand on the hinged side of the door when his cousin accidentally closed the door and Daniel panicked. He jerked his hand out of the door leaving behind a large portion of his upper finger. It wasn't a pretty sight when I saw it, and immediately Darin's mom was calling 911. The EMTs showed up within minutes. Daniel's plea to them for help was heart breaking. I did everything I could not to break down. They did a quick wrapping of his finger and then sent us on our way to the nearest ER (which was 20 minutes away). Luckily Darin's parents took Rylie so we could just focus on Daniel while at the hospital. He was very traumatized and cried for much of the time we were there. The final outcome was they cleaned up his finger, bandaged it up and reassured us that it would grow back just fine. They did do x-rays but found there was nothing broken. As for reattaching the skin, they stated that it was too dirty and was only needed to help protect the wound from infection.

We were all amazed to see how quickly his finger started healing. If you ask Daniel he will automatically state that his body is amazing. At this point I only bandage his finger up at night so that the Neosporin can help. It looks as if it will be back to normal by the end of the month. Wow!

It is hilarious, ever since this has happened Daniel will stop complete strangers and tell them all about it. Anyone who is willing to listen will get a complete synopsis of his accident. Some have heard the tell multiple times now. He sure finds it his claim for fame.

Also, notice all the firemen stickers on his shirt. He was thrilled with all the extra attention he got and loved the stickers he got from the EMT's and the firemen who visited the hospital. Daniel also got a stuffed pet dog that he has been carrying around since his visit.


December turned out to be a very expensive month for us medically. 2 weeks earlier, Rylie had been playing in our backyard when she tripped over her own feet and fell. She ended up biting through her lower lip. We tried the nearby Urgent Care, but they sent us on to the nearest ER (25 minutes away). They just glued the cut shut (the most expensive glue we have ever bought) and then sent her back home. If you look at the above picture you can see a little cut below her lip.
