The flies are gone now so my opinion of spiders has changed. I was walking around in my back yard and noticed quite a few little brown spiders. When I started really paying attention I noticed they were all in the grass as well as the rock border around the far end of our yard.
Some were harmless little jumping spiders no bigger than a lady bug, but others were a little bigger, about the size of a water spider, except these were skating my yard, not water. Then I noticed the webs in the trees. Granted there were quite a few dead bugs caught in those webs which warranted a grunt of satisfaction, but when I saw this hanging between a bush and a tree, I drew the line:
You can't really appreciate it's size from these pictures, but I wasn't about to hold up a quarter for size comparison, I was afraid I might lose a finger, or arm. It was about the size of a half dollar. After I killed this one I closely inspected the tree next to it and found another one.
I killed that one too. The spiders have now over-stayed their welcome. I discovered webs all over our back yard in the trees and bushes and low ground cover.
David Arquette in Eight Legged Freaks came to mind:

It's time to do some killing this weekend.
Hello Heidi my dear friend...how I miss you!! Anyways, when we lived in Texas we had lots of creatures in our yard too...scorpions, spiders, you know, all the creepy stuff. Anyways, we learned that if you spray your yard once a month with a yard bug spray, it keeps them away. It is very strong so when you spray it you can't let the kids go out for about an hour...but it works great!! good luck
